Foothills Academy Upper School
> a # - More Than a Number
The Foothills Academy Upper School program presents essential knowledge to students through an experiential and globally relevant curriculum. Our students enjoy the creative and challenging classes, the exciting outings, the community involvement and the personalized attention that our program offers. As a result of this outstanding high school program, 100% of our seniors have been accepted to four-year colleges of their choice, and, just as our alumni have told us they were, our graduates are uniquely well prepared to be successful when they embark upon the next step in their life’s journey of learning. Furthermore, parents of Foothills Academy students continually echo their children's enthusiasm for the school.
Read on to find out how each student is MORE THAN A NUMBER in the Foothills Academy Upper School.
Relationships at Foothills make a difference
Foothills is small by design; students know not only classmates, but also teachers and students from all levels. Graduates relate that they felt important at Foothills -- teachers cared about them, knew their strengths and challenges and mentored them as individual learners. Because each student is recognized as an individual and an important community member, opportunities to lead and contribute abound.
Education is connected to the world beyond the classroom
Without exception, Foothills graduates point to the Outings Program as a highlight. Whether in Utah or Guatemala, in the San Juan Islands or in the Andes, in downtown Denver or in Santa Fe, students explore the world. Classroom learning takes on meaning when students studying Westward expansion visit Wounded Knee or Spanish students visit a Costa Rican "shanty town" and speak with residents. Current events can often determine the educational direction and climate at Foothills. See how the classrooms at Foothills responded to the earthquake in Haiti. Outings provide opportunities for leadership and are peak experiences. Relevance is key at Foothills because we understand learning that relates to students, their world and interests, takes hold.
Life-long learners
Time and again graduates tell us they know how to make their way -- whether asking questions, using traditional resources or enlisting the help and wisdom of others. This includes knowing how to successfully navigate the larger environments of college and the world beyond. At Foothills, students learn skills and much more; they learn how to bring skills together with interests, opportunities and challenges. They are problem-solvers individually and as team members because reflecting on information, not simply restating it, is a day-by-day expectation in our classrooms.
Foothills graduates cite the Senior Project as exemplary. Using skills developed in earlier classes, each senior explores a keen personal interest in class and away from school. This demanding and self-directed research project demonstrates and refines competence as seniors complete a practicum, a lengthy research paper, and, using creative and technology elements, formally present their learning to parents, teachers and students.
Exceptional Communicators
Our graduates tell us they are able to convey what they think and what they know. Foothills students understand how to contribute and are confident before groups of all sizes. Sharing information is fundamental and evident in the broad array of opportunities that promote the development of communication skills. Investigations and assignments give students an opportunity to express learning in sundry ways -- through writing and art, performance and presentations. Being an effective communicator is an earmark of success and Foothills students have the skills, experience and confidence to speak for themselves and reflect their learning to provide not just answers, but solutions.
